Janja Garnbret’s Early Life and Biography

Janja is a Slovenian female climber. She was born on the 12th of March, 1999. In 2006, she realized her passion for sports climbing when she was just seven years old.

Her father, Darja, and mother, Villi Garnbret, are said to have introduced her to indoor climbing. This was after they saw her tree climbing and getting on top of cupboards.

Her experience developed when she was exposed to more rigorous climbing gyms and even started to train with the national team of Slovenia under the direction of coach Gorazd Hren.

Garnbret competed in local sport climbing contests and, at the age of 14, was selected for the Slovenian junior climbing team. In the lead climbing event, she won her first international title at the World Youth B Championships in 2014.

2019

In totality, Garnbret earned gold in 3 of the four categories at the 2019 IFSC Climbing Main Event, which involved a triple set of techniques- bouldering, lead, and mixed. Such a feat has never been accomplished in the entire history of sports climbing.

2018

She participated in World Cup championships for lead and mixed climbing in 2018 and came out on top in bouldering. This meant that she was to retain her bouldering medal.

Unfortunately, due to school commitments, she had two golds and silver after competing in only three of the seven events. Janja also won both the World Bouldering and Mixed Championships. 

She would later participate in lead climbing and only came within 11 seconds of winning the lead climbing competition. This forced her hand on the silver just after 4 minutes and 38 seconds and 11 seconds behind the winner, Jessica Pilz.

2016

In 2016, Janja won the IFSC lead and mixed climbing gold. It was then followed by the World Championships for leading and a youth championship for leading and bouldering.

She won the season medal in both the lead and mixed categories from 2016 to 2018. Janja would add a medal from the world bouldering and mixed climbing championships in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, a lead title was also released.

Garnbret then became the first climber to come out on top in every Bouldering World Cup competition in a season in just 20 years. She won six qualifying, four semifinals, and six finals over the course of six tournaments, totaling 74 bouldering challenges out of 78.

She topped the majority of the IFSC events she entered in 2016. She won a World Cup in both lead and combined categories and the championships for leading and the World Youth Olympics in leading and bouldering.
