Anak Verhoeven’s Early Life and Biography

Anak Verhoeven is a Belgian professional climber. On July 15th, 1996, she was born in Shriek to climbing parents.

In the past five years, Verhoeven has been famous for being the first female climber in history to set up a 9a+ (5.15a) path.

Verhoeven’s path to climbing traces back to when she was four years old. However, it wasn’t until she was eleven that she started to give it serious attention. 

She made her debut in the junior competitions in 2010 and, in 2013, she earned a spot in the senior circuit.

Since then, Anak has established a solid reputation as a repeated champion of the Belgian lead climber’s tournament.

By 2016, she had also made it to the top of the IFSC world ranking list.

She got herself a double win at both the world championships and the EU IFSC tournaments a year later. Astrologically, she has the Cancer zodiac sign. 

Anak Verhoeven’s Climbing Career

  • She began competing in the Lead Climber’s World Championships in 2012 when she was 16. In 2014, she became the youngest European winner at the Games in Edinburgh.
  • In 2015, she marked the end of her participation in the junior sector by claiming the Global Youth Cup in Italy. Again, she would also compete in the Lead Climber’s World tournament in the same year and finish in fourth place.
  • She participated in the Summer Olympics in France in 2016 and made it through to the finals. Rival Janja Garnbret beat her to the gold medal.
  • Early in 2017, she won gold medals in both the word tournaments and the IFSC competitions in Europe.
  • Due to an elbow injury, Verhoeven had to withdraw from competitive climbing in late 2017 and find a new job. She could not fully recuperate till 2019. But after two years, in 2021, she would go ahead and announce her retirement from competitive climbing. Consequently, she shifted her attention to outdoor rock climbing. 
  • She made the debut attempt of a first free ascent on the Sang Neu’s grade 9a (5.14d) climb in September 2017. When he accomplished his feat in France, she became the first female athlete in climbing history to achieve this feat.
  • Additionally, Anak performed a first free ascent on the Sweet Neuf, which connects Sang Neuf to the 25-meter Home Sweet Home route, and requested a 9a+ (5.15a) grading and Cedric Lachat positively validated in 2019 after rescaling the same climb.
  • By making an ascent on the Sweet Neuf, she became the first female athlete to make a first free ascent on a 9a+ route and the second female athlete behind Margo Hayes, to scale a 9a+ climb. 
  • Late in 2017, Verhoven completed the first free ascent of the 9a/9a+ course, the Ciudad de Dios pa la Enmienda, making her the first lady climber to complete a first free ascent on a 9a+ course.
  • She scaled her second 9a+, Joe Mama, in 2019, situated in Spain. By June 2020, Anak completed the first free ascent of Kraftio, a path bolted 15 years before but had resisted all climbing efforts. She, therefore, graded it 8c+/9a, marking it as the toughest-ever sport climbing course in Belgium, and named it “Chloe Graftiaux.”
